Week 8 - Playoffs Round 1 - Colts v. Patriots
Stratton Faxon Mighty Mite Colts 33 Patriots 8
The Stratton Faxon Mighty Mite Colts faced a determined Patriots team today in the first round of the 2008 WHYFL playoffs. The first half featured outstanding defensive play by both teams. The Colts opened the scoring in the first quarter on an impressive reverse play. John Lagoy sprinted around right end and down the sidelines aided by an excellent block by Spencer Witter. The Colts converted the extra point on a pretty pass from QB Michael Mathews to Spencer Witter in the back of the end zone. The Patriots came right back putting their own score on the board, converting on a pass play to tie the score at 8-8. Declan Flaherty put the Colts on the board again in the second quarter with a blast up the middle to make the score 14-8. A tough patriots defense denied the extra point and the Colts settled for a six point half-time lead.
In the second half, the Colts came alive. A punishing offensive line created huge holes, and the Colts offense pounded the ball inside. Declan Flaherty scored twice more on power runs to the left behind excellent blocking of Jack Moore, Jack Lazor and Olivia Moran. Jack Moore finished off the scoring with a power run of his own over the left side of the line, and followed it up with a blast on the right side for the extra point and a final game score of 33-8.
The Colts defense continued to show improvement. Declan Flaherty and Spencer Witter lead a punishing attack with many hard-hitting tackles against tough Patriots runners. Aidan Stabnick and Peter Brown made some half-time adjustments and stopped the Patriots off-tackle attack in the second half. Most notable of all, however, were the individual efforts of Thomas Sullivan and Jonathan Lagoy. First, Sullivan chased down a Patriots runner in the open field and made a touchdown saving tackle. Lagoy made a similar effort on a forth down play to deny a Patriots first down at a point in the second quarter when the game was close and a Patriots first down could have given the Patriots momentum going into to halftime.
Congratulations to the Patriots for a very well played game. The Colts, meanwhile, look forward to their re-match with the Titans this coming week.
